BACKGROUND

In the year 2000, on behalf of a close friend, Sam was exploring scooter dealership opportunities in the South American market. He observed a potential for restored scooters in those markets. He discussed the opportunity with his friends but they did not believe there was a potential in the restored scooter business. Sam, however, was convinced about the potential of the business and therefore in the year 2000-01, he started Auto Scoot Exports with the financial and managerial support of family and friends. Auto Scoot was set up with a small number of employees at Jabalpur, India. The plant had a workforce of 10-15 skilled workmen, one store keeper, and a Manager, Technical. While the workmen were responsible for carrying out the restoration of the scooters, the store keeper had to look after the handling of inventory of new components and supplies supporting the restoration process.
